Clean New Baseload Generation
Coal-to-Liquids & Coal-to-Gas Carbon Capture & Storage Plug-in Electric Hybrids Fast Fact China uses approximately 1/8 the electricity per capita as the U.S. and has just 2% of the per capita passenger vehicle ownership. |
CLEAN NEW BASELOAD GENERATIONCoal is Fueling the Largest Build Out of New Power Plants in a GenerationWe need all forms of energy to fuel U.S. electricity needs, but coal is the only large scale sustainable solution that can shoulder the load. America’s vast supply of coal is the largest in the world, and coal has been the world’s fastest-growing fuel for each of the past five years, driving the largest U.S. build out of clean coal plants in a generation. America has more coal than Saudi Arabia has oil, and five times more coal than all our oil and natural gas reserves combined. New coal-fueled plants are essential to supply needed power to keep America humming, and do so with just a fraction of the emissions of today’s plants. More than 16 gigawatts of U.S. power are in development that would require an additional 60 million tons of coal annually. The new fleet uses superior technologies that typically produce one-fifth the emissions rate of the current fleet with greater efficiencies that result in carbon dioxide emission rates that are 15 percent lower. This environmental improvement will continue as the industry pursues the vision of near-zero emissions with carbon capture for enhanced oil recovery or long-term storage. Carbon capture and storage is the enabling technology that will unlock the huge value in coal for energy security, economic growth and environmental solutions. Coal Comprises 60% of Global Energy Resources
USGS, National Assessment of United States Oil and Gas Resources, U.S. Coal Reserves; Energy Information Administration Monthly Energy Review, March 2008 Table 7.2b, 2007 data. The United States has the world’s largest coal reserve position, with 27% of the world’s supply. Coal comprises 60% of global energy resources and 85% of U.S. fuel. |
