Yes, America is the Saudi Arabia of Coal
In a recent Wall Street Journal article on U.S. coal reserves, a spokesperson for the U.S. Geological Survey is quoted as saying, “We really can’t say we’re the Saudi Arabia of coal anymore."
Oh really…Since when? Of course we can – and we are. America has enough coal to power our economy for the next century and beyond.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says we have 267 billion tons of economically recoverable coal for 240 years at current use. Cal Tech researchers say about 130 billion tons for 120 years. Even taking the Cal Tech number, we have far more btu in recoverable coal than the Saudis have oil. U.S. coal has the equivalent of 550 billion barrels of oil. Saudi oil reserves are only 260 million barrels. In short, even using the conservative (and unlikely) Cal Tech numbers, we have enough low-cost coal to last until Halley’s Comet comes around again – for the second time.
And there will certainly be far more coal available than Cal Tech researchers indicate. It all depends on technology and price. Even George Warholic at EIA said recently, “It’s kind of crazy to postulate how long U.S. reserves will last... 110 years or 225 years...it all depends on your assumptions.”
He’s right. Many of the coal seams producing today were viewed as uneconomic 30 years ago. Technology is constantly improving, and even modest price increases open up vast expanses of coal all over the nation – especially in the Powder River Basin. America has 28 percent of the world’s coal reserves, more coal than any other nation, and coal is in the ground in over half the states, our energy ace in the hole.
In short, we know where the coal is and how to get it. Our coal reserves are far more predictable than oil and natural gas supplies and offer Americans much needed energy security at just a fraction of the cost of the alternatives.
If we split the difference between Cal Tech and EIA forecasts, we get about 200 billion tons. That amount of coal could:
- Supply over 100 years of electricity to the entire nation
- Yield upwards of a trillion barrels of oil using coal-to-liquid technology – over 125 years of current consumption
- Provide over 2,000 trillion cubic feet of substitute natural gas – lasting a century at present rates of usage
Coal has been and will continue to be the steady workhorse for our electricity supply. And, through the process of coal conversion it can also help relieve our oil and natural gas constraints. Unlike any other nation, America’s coal creates an energy advantage that is abundant, secure and uniquely ours.

Reliable, affordable electricity is vital to America. Still, many people don't know that coal fuels nearly 50 percent of our electric power. Here at the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE), we started the Factuality Tour, a multi-stop, cross-country tour and video blog, to tell the true story of coal in America — from mine to plug.

Clean Coal Has Scale to Alleviate Energy Poverty
Citizens with good access to electricity are far more likely to live longer, eat better and enjoy a higher education. Yet more than 2 billion people around the world lack adequate access to electricity. Another 1.6 billion – more than five times the U.S. population – have no electricity at all and need power for basic needs: clean drinking water, light and home heat.

Coal is the primary source of the world’s electricity and the only fuel with the scale and cost advantage to alleviate energy poverty. The power of coal to lift people to a higher quality of life is perhaps most notable in China, which uses coal to fuel 80 percent of its electricity.
Less than a generation ago, more than 600 million people in China lacked electricity and only 1 in 500 had a telephone. Today, China is the world’s third-largest economy behind the United States and Japan. More than 700 million people have gained access to electricity.
Coal fuels China’s remarkable rise, along with the economies of scores of other nations. China’s example is as a model for the developing world, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency: “Electrification in China is a remarkable success story… The important lesson for other developing countries is that electrified countries reap great benefits, both in terms of economic growth and human welfare, and China stands as an example.”
And while Asia’s long-term projected energy needs are enormous, more mature economies will also continue to demand affordable power to sustain our modern way of life. Coal’s affordability and abundance make it a fuel for social progress even in the most advanced economies. Coal is the world’s fastest-growing fuel. Dozens of nations are developing new coal-fueled generation and more than 200 gigawatts of coal plants are under construction and expected to begin generation in the next several years. This in turn, drives significant economic growth, representing about 4.5 million jobs and $1 trillion in economic impacts. New coal plants also use advanced technologies that have dramatically lower emissions than the existing fleet and lower carbon footprints.

Coal’s improving environmental track record gives it a new green profile as the world’s favorite fuel. And technologies now under development are changing the color of coal, working to achieve the ultimate goal of near-zero emissions with carbon management.

Coal Is the Cornerstone of America's Electricity Supply
A new President and Congress will soon take their seats in Washington and our energy situation will be high on their agenda. As the debate proceeds, it will behoove all Americans to remember the crucial role electricity plays in our prosperity and quality of life.
In 1999, the American Academy of Engineering labeled electricity the “single most important engineering achievement of the past century”. And no wonder, electricity is the lifeblood of our modern society, powering homes, businesses, farms, institutions, communication, manufacturing and health care and safety systems. Life as we know it would be impossible without electricity and it is a hallmark of our society that for decades Americans have benefited from the most reliable electric power system in the world.
Coal is the foundation of that reliability. Coal produces 50% of our electricity and that means a staggering 2,000 billion kilowatt hours--more than all the electricity used in Germany , France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom combined . The 600 coal plants scattered throughout the nation are the tireless workhorses of our electric generation fleet. Coal plants produce electricity when drought hits the hydroelectric dams, solar panels are clouded over and wind turbines are in the doldrums. They produce electricity when natural gas is too expensive to use and when nuclear power plants are closed. Coal power plants are there each day, every day, 24-7.
Coal-based electric power has socioeconomic benefits that go far beyond the plants themselves. Coal generation produces more than $1 trillion in GDP, generates over $360 billion in household income and supports nearly 7 million jobs. Tax revenues from coal production and use support local communities, the states and the federal government. The stability of coal prices and the consistency of supply allow families, businesses and institutions to plan for the future under the safe assumption coal-based electricity will be there. Coal is the energy basis of our national security.
The scale of the power coal brings to the table often gets lost in words-- 50% slides easily off the lips -- 50% of this, 50% of that. But just think for a minute of what 50% really means -- it means half. In other words, coal powers half the electricity -- more than the combined output of nuclear (20%), natural gas (20%) and hydroelectric (6%). Wind produces only 2% and solar virtually nothing. Even more importantly, the time and cost which would be required to bring these other fuels to a national scale means coal is here to stay.
In fact, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasted that over the next 20 years the amount of the electricity produced by coal will increase significantly. This new electric power from coal will be sorely needed. The United States is a growing country. Each year we add over 3 million people to the population, start millions of new businesses and buy tens of millions of computers, iPods and electric coffeepots. Through all of this growth there is only one fact about our electric power system of which we can be sure--- coal is America's fuel.
Coal's past is only prologue to its future. The United States has more coal than OPEC has oil and Iran and Russia have natural gas. Coal can reliably provide affordable electric power to Americans for the next 200 years or more. In short, coal has been, is and will continue to be the cornerstone of not only our electric power system but also of our economic prosperity and the quality of our life. Coal really can do that.

Coal-to-Gas is Off-the-Shelf Energy Solution
The Question: “How can we obtain enough NG at affordable prices to (1) power over 400,000 MW of NG based generation capacity, (2) heat tens of millions of homes and buildings, (3) meet the needs of manufacturing and agriculture, and (4) make ethanol, fertilizer and other energy related products?
The Answer: We can’t.
Enter substitute natural gas (SNG), the product of coal gasification, an established technology that has been around for a century and currently in use throughout the world. SNG facilities can now be made “carbon storage ready” to take advantage of emerging technologies in CO2 capture, leading the way to a virtually emission free use of coal. The captured CO2 can then be stored indefinitely or more productively, be utilized to recover “stranded” oil in depleted fields throughout the nation. Texas alone, for example, has over 35 billion barrels of potentially recoverable oil using CO2 injection.
In addition, SNG technology:
- Produces pipeline quality NG equivalents that can be used to fuel power plants, heat homes and manufacture a wide range of goods.
- Removes 95% of the mercury and virtually 100% of the sulfur. Further, the captured sulfur can be used to make fertilizer and the ash from combustion of coal can be used to make roads and related infrastructure.
- Provides fuel for the hundreds of NG dependent power plants we imprudently built over the past decade based on erroneous predictions of NG price and production. In short, prices have escalated and production has stagnated leaving many NG power plants too expensive to operate.
- Boost the economy of local communities and provide well paying jobs. A planned SNG state-of-the-art facility in Kentucky, for example, will create 1,200 construction jobs for four years, 500 permanent jobs and pump over $100 million into the economy of host Muhlenberg County and surrounding communities.
SNG is a prime example of how off the shelf clean coal conversion technologies can improve our quality of life and fully unlock the socioeconomic value of our greatest energy resource – coal. And the ability to remove just about all the sulfur will open up new vistas for use of coal resources in many states. Missouri, for example, has substantial coal resources that are relatively high in sulfur. SNG will open the door to these resources and significantly benefit economic growth in such states.
