Yes, America is the Saudi Arabia of Coal

In a recent Wall Street Journal article on U.S. coal reserves, a spokesperson for the U.S. Geological Survey is quoted as saying, “We really can’t say we’re the Saudi Arabia of coal anymore.” Oh really…Since when? Legendary reliability: The value of just one coal plant — oh, and wind

Our inability to grasp scale is one of the reasons we have been unable to develop a coherent energy policy. It is hard to formulate a plan to manage such a far ranging issue whose scope is global. Like gullible settlers in the Old West, our lack of comprehension leaves us vulnerable to the latest salesman to come to town. Such salesmen abound in the energy business, spouting the rhetoric of the unrealistic potential of alternatives and renewables — and brandishing heady promises.

Coal Hard Facts
Jay Apt, Carnegie Mellon University, Electricity Industry Center:
"You need firm power to fill in when the wind doesn't blow. There's just no getting around that. Some combination of more gas- or coal-fired generation, or nuclear power, will be needed. Demand response can provide a significant buffering of the power fluctuations coming from wind. Interacting widely scattered wind farms cannot provide smooth power."
